Dr Yan Xia

Dr Yan Xia joined the Centre for Computational Imaging and Simulation Technologies in Biomedicine (CISTIB) at the University of Leeds in January 2020, working on the topic of Artificial Intelligence for Medical Imaging.

Previously, Yan obtained his master degree at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in 2012, Germany, majoring in computational engineering. From 2012 to 2016, he was pursuing a PhD degree at Pattern Recognition Lab, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. The project was in close collaboration with Siemens healthcare. The topic was to develop 3D ROI image reconstruction algorithms for saving radiation dose to the patients without compromising image quality. After graduation, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University, using machine learning and deep learning to develop clinical decision support for super-selective transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), e.g., fully automatic liver tumour segmentation, tumour treatment response assessment, etc.  From 2018 to 2019, Yan worked in a medical technology startup in China. The company aims to use deep learning and image processing techniques for medical image diagnosis to help physicians and radiologists improve efficiency and interpret challenging cases. He obtained a better understanding of clinical problems as well as clinical workflow, which can motivate the research. His research interests include artificial intelligence, deep learning/machine learning and medical image analysis and computing.
